Christmas in Verona

Christmas in Verona

Verona, the city of love is famously visited in the Summer, however this city turns into a winter wonderland during Christmas time. The whole city is covered in lights and decorations that last until New Year’s Day. The Veronese are so excited by this time of year, that they build a giant shooting star from their famous Arena, open many Christmas and food markets.

A little bit of Germany

Every Christmas market should be a little bit German, no matter where you are in the world, their influence is limitless. Verona’s main “Christkindlmarkt” takes place in late November in Piazza dei Signori, an enclosed square in the heart of the historical centre. Traditional wooden huts are placed within the square, bursting with decorations and gifts; the crisp winter air is softened by the smell of hot chocolate and mulled wine that will keep you warm. Who can say no to that?

But it doesn’t stop there

The city decides that one market is not enough, so they open a second one in Piazza Bra, home to the famous Arena. The market is dedicated to Santa Lucia, a holiday typically celebrated in northern Italy; open for only three magical days. According to tradition, on the night of December 12th Santa will come with his donkey and bring cakes for the good children and coal to the bad children. In honour of this tradition, over 300 stalls open selling sweets, cakes, toys and gifts.

For those Christmas enthusiasts

Natale in Arena is an exhibition of an unusual collection of nativity scenes from all over the world, displayed in the underground passageways of the Arena.  The hidden archways and columns lined with a glow of light, every stone and space is used to show in time the story of Bethlehem. The icon of this exhibition is the comet star that lands in Piazza Bra, used as a symbol to connect Verona to other cities; as over 400 cribs are granted by major European museums.

A Winter Favourite

One of the typical winter holiday activities is to visit the main museums and galleries, in this Verona is number one. The museum of Castelvecchio is a favourite of ours, it recites the history of Verona and more importantly the Scaligeri family. It is not only a museum but an art gallery as well, the art collection describes the development of art over the years. Gallery of Modern Art is another great place to visit in the cold weather, it is based in Palazzo Forti an historical building once owned by the Emilei Family. This Gallery has a new mission to represent the city’s cultural, historical, architectural and artistic heritage.
