Just a few kilometers from Lake Garda and the slopes of the Prealps, there is a jewel kept unchanged over time.
With its long history, dating back more than 2000 years ago, the city of Verona fascinates every person who comes into contact with it. Its monuments, its streets, its history and its atmosphere are elements that make it unique. A city that loves to love, perhaps because here love is breathing at every corner.
To convince you to visit our city we thought to collect 3 good reasons, which together make Verona a destination to be missed. Let’s find them together.
1) Adige River
Verona welcomes the waters of the Adige at the point where the river enters the Po Valley. It has always been an important way of communication and on its shores there are many important Italian cities, including Verona.
Its waters flowed into several branches. The two most famous were the Dead Sea channel, whose name originated from the slow flow of its waters, and the Adigetto, a large moat used for defensive purposes. These were joined by more than 70 “vos”, channels that communicated the dwellings with the river.
With a jump back in time, reappears along the banks of the Adige towers, dariari tugs, landings, castles and strong. The Adige river was a trading route of goods and water-related activities, which allowed the city and the surrounding area a large commercial development. A characteristic feature of the river was the mill, built on a platform that adapts to the water level and connected to the shore by a bridge. During the nineteenth century mills were over 400 and disappeared in the early twentieth century with the industrialization of the city.
On September 16, 1882, Adige changed the appearance of the city following a flood, following which the walled walls were erected and the Adigetto and the Dead Sea channel were built.
2) World Heritage
Even before being the city of love, Verona represents one of our Italian jewels declared as UNESCO World Heritage on November 30, 2000.
The historical periods that followed have left an indelible imprint on the city, which has allowed every small detail to remain unchanged over time and reach us. Today Verona is the result of a progressive and uninterrupted development lasting more than 2000 years. Inside there are artistic and architectural elements of different epochs that coexist with each other and have made Verona an example of a “fortified city in several stages characteristic of European history”.
Its foundation dates back to the first century BC. and walking through the streets of the old town you can find the elements of the expansions that the city has been subjected to. After the Romans, the Scala family and then the Venetian Dogs left their mark by adding parts to the already existing complex.
3) Love
Verona is the city of love. A noble feeling that breathes every corner of the city, a bit because of Romeo and Juliet’s famous love story and a bit because Verona offers lovely places to walk hand in hand with its sweet half.
For lovers who visit our town Juliet’s house and the balcony from which she faced invoking Romeo is a compulsory stage. The corridor that opens in Cappello Street is the place that keeps thousands of promises of love. A few steps away there is the square of the Herbs, which at sunset offers a romantic atmosphere, and for the most impassive couples waiting for the panorama you enjoy from the Lamberti Tower, the tallest building in the city.
What about Square Bra? In the evening, when crowds of tourists sit in the restaurants or rest in the room, it’s the best place to take a stroll through admiring the majesty of the Arena. A walk that can continue along the river Adige to hear its slow flowing into the moonlight.
